Gemini Token Counter

Google hasn't published a standalone Gemini tokenizer, so an exact browser-side count isn't possible. Here's an honest heuristic estimate — plus Google's official countTokens endpoint when you need the real number.

Google has not published a standalone tokenizer for Gemini, so this is a heuristic (~4 characters per token for English). Treat it as a rough estimate, not a bill.

What this text would cost, per model

Sorted cheapest first. Assumes 0 input tokens and 500 output tokens. Counts for non-OpenAI rows are estimates.

“With cache hits” assumes all input tokens hit the prompt cache, where the provider publishes a cached-input rate. DeepSeek rows use off-peak rates; peak hours cost 2×.

Prices change frequently — last verified 2026-09-30. Rates below are USD per 1M tokens from public pricing pages. Always confirm on the provider's official pricing page before budgeting.

Want an exact count? Use the official API

The counter above is a heuristic estimate. Google publishes an official token-counting endpoint (models:countTokens on gemini-3-8-flash, free tier available). If you have an API key, you can call it right here — the key stays in your browser and is sent only to Google's API. We never see or store it.

About Gemini token counting

Gemini API pricing is per token, but Google doesn't distribute the tokenizer as a library the way OpenAI does with tiktoken. Client-side tools therefore have two honest options: estimate, or call Google's countTokens API. This page does both — the estimate is instant and free, the API call is exact and uses your own key.

Comparing providers? The main LLM token counter puts Gemini side by side with OpenAI, Anthropic, and DeepSeek pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Gemini count only an estimate?

Google has not published a standalone tokenizer for Gemini models that you can run in a browser. Any client-side Gemini counter is therefore a heuristic — we label ours as an estimate instead of presenting it as exact.

How is the estimate calculated?

We use roughly 4 characters per token for English text, in line with Google's own rough guidance. Code, multilingual text, and images tokenize very differently, so treat the number as a rough guide.

How can I get an exact Gemini token count?

Google's countTokens endpoint (models:countTokens) returns exact counts and has a free tier. Enable the panel above with your own API key and this page will call it directly from your browser — the key never leaves your device.

Do thinking tokens cost extra on Gemini?

It depends on the model. On some Gemini models, internal reasoning (thinking) tokens are billed at a higher rate than regular output — for example, Gemini 2.5 Flash billed thinking tokens at 1.4× the output rate. Check the model's pricing notes before estimating agent workloads.

Which Gemini models are covered?

The cost table covers Gemini 3.8 Flash, Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview, and Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite with public per-million-token rates. Note that Gemini 3.8 Flash pricing is introductory through the end of 2026.
